[18+] He Who Makes a Beast of Himself [r. lizard] Gets Rid of the Pain of Being a Man

Post by Master of Shadows » Tue Aug 29, 2017 12:53 am

I’ve acquired a taste for watching you in pain,
it’s a feral tendency I can’t explain.
But why should I have the beast on a chain?

Lightning flickered across the cloudy night sky and somewhere in the distance, something roared. Compared to most nights, the sound of the jungle was subdued, likely from the incoming storm. It had done nothing to prevent his earlier hunt from being successful, however…Then again, most things had been bedded down this evening and it’d been easy to pick off the juvenile Corythosaurus after he’d spooked the herd.

Leaning forward, he spat out a bit of gristle from his meal before settling back into the carved out tree nest. As he had gotten older, he’d carved on it to make more space. He wasn’t exactly a kid anymore who could fit into tiny spots. No, he was an adult now and had been for some time now. Truthfully, he really didn’t know how many years had passed, especially after the soldiers stopped coming. The last date he was able to clearly remember had been in late 2008, according to the phone he'd pilfered from someone he'd killed. It was very likely that a number of years had passed since then.

It didn’t really matter to him. Well, alright. He did miss hunting down the soldiers sent to capture him, but that was about it. Beyond that, he really didn’t care about the outside world since he had spent most of his life on Isla Sorna. Anything he really knew about the outside world was likely to be irrelevant now, anyway. Hell, he couldn’t really remember much about his life before Sorna, just that the plane had gone down. Even then, the days after that had been a jumble of fear and sheer survival.

He shifted so that he was lying down, with his feet up against the wall of the nest. The thunder was closer now and the wind was picking up, causing the temperature to drop. Since it was in the middle of summer, the cooler temperatures were nice. Sure, he was long since used to the humid summers, but that didn’t mean he enjoyed sweating all day long.

As he watched the lightning in the clouds become more intense, his thoughts drifted back to when he first arrived on the island. While he’d been scavenging for food and supplies, he’d come across a lab that was still working. Obviously, he thought that maybe he’d be able to get off the island since he'd found someone else who was alive. Instead, it gave him the gift of survival. He couldn’t remember what the scientist had said, so many years ago, something about the military and the future. In any case, he’d managed to get away. Some days later, he had discovered something…Wonderful. He could change. Change into one of the damned dinosaurs that had always hoped to make a meal out of him.

More importantly, it gave him a way to survive on the god forsaken island. Sure, it’d been confusing at first, figuring everything out, but he had rapidly embraced it. Admittedly, it came with the issue of having armed soldiers come after him every so often, but he had dealt with them easily. He wasn't sure why the soldiers had stopped, but it was probably InGen cutting their losses…Assuming the company even existed anymore. Hell, he didn’t know if the rest of the world existed. For all he knew, everything had gone to hell. Good thing he didn’t care. For the most part, he had shrugged off most aspects of humanity. He had no idea how old he was, just that he wasn’t a teen anymore, given that he'd stopped growing awhile back. Truthfully, he barely remembered his name. With no one around, it really didn’t matter. More than anything, he lived as a raptor and as long as the hunting was good, so was life.

There was another rumble overhead before the sky simply opened up and started dumping rain. Knowing that the humidity in the morning would bring all sorts of bugs, he shifted slightly to knock out the remains of his meal. He listened to it hit a few branches as it fell, but it was raining hard enough that he didn’t hear it land on the ground. No doubt one of the Compy packs would find it and make a quick meal of it. The rainfall continued to drown out all the other sounds of the island and so he finally rolled over onto his side to sleep.

It was the heat and humidity of the morning that woke him up, leaving him feeling vaguely overheated. Grimacing, he sat up and squinted at the brightness of the sunlight reflecting off the water still on the leaves. After a healthy yawn, he started climbing down the tree but dropped down the final ten feet or so to the ground. Distantly, he heard the rumbling call of some sauropod calling to its herd, but there was nothing to suggest that there were dinosaurs in the local area. He didn't have much to fear on the island outside of the carnivores larger than him, which was limited to only a few.

Lazily, he wandered down a beaten trail, ignoring how his feet sunk into the muck a bit. Honestly, he wasn’t too hungry yet and so hunting didn’t seem appealing. If anything, a quick dunk in one of the streams sounded like a better idea, then maybe lazing around until he actually got hungry. That, of course, was assuming that nothing happened to garner his attention.
I’m a different face of the man you knew,
what you thought were lies turned out to be true.
But you’ll be dead when I’m through.
War is coming swiftly... ..You don't know my power... I will resist and bite.

Rowan was a man who appreciated money. And InGen? Had a shitton of money. Enough that he'd agreed to work with a team on a new mission they were cooking up. It wasn't how he usually operated, but hell. He could always kill the other survivors. The debrief didn't give them much to work with, at least not much that wasn't fifteen years old. But they knew what and where their target was, and that was all that was necessary right now.

The debrief was as boring as always, but it explained everything he needed to know, and, of course, a million things he didn't need to know. And then they were on their way to some random island that supposedly housed one freakish human-dinosaur hybrid genetic experiment. Rowan didn't bother learning his teammates' names or why they bothered being here - the former didn't matter and the latter was the same for all of them. On the ferry to the island, they all stayed to themselves anyway, not particularly caring to get friendly.

Once they got to the island, they went to work, setting up a perimeter and moving inland from there. It didn't take long to get a feel for the island, and of course barely any longer to make contact with the first dinosaurs. A couple of the guys looked a little startled, like they thought 'real life dinosaur' was code for, who knew, animatronics or something. But then, of course, one of the fuckwads decided to shoot at them.

Needless to say, everyone was pretty pissed. Besides the idiot that thought it was a good idea to turn an island full of monsters into a shooting gallery. Cretin. He got put at the front of the pack for that, in vague hope that he'd so something else stupid and get eaten. And happily enough, Rowan was pretty sure that that was exactly what happened when they made contact with something. Although he had no idea what they were making contact with besides the fact that it was big, angry, and full of teeth.

And then one of the idiots screamed at the top of his lungs and ran for it. Rowan felt like facepalming, but instead he just laid low and watched, trying to calculate how many were dead and where the others would have gone to ground. He was pretty sure he heard a couple get picked off here and there, but whether it was to their target or something else, he wasn't sure.

He sent the guy hiding with him out to find some of the others, not particularly caring if the man got eaten or not. And he went off in the opposite direction they'd last heard the creature in, so Rowan didn't think he was entirely witless... just mostly. Rather than deciding to go and serve himself up on a platter, he waited to see what would happen next. Probably someone else getting eaten, but possibly he'd be pleasantly surprised. Although, in all honesty, the fact that each death meant more money for the survivors didn't bother him. It wasn't like he was planning on letting any of these guys get off the island.

He had opted to take a quick dunk in one of the streams to wash off yesterday's grime. Sure, he might be doing the whole 'Tarzan of the Dinosaurs' thing, but that didn't mean he ignored personal hygiene. Besides, stinking tended to spook the prey and it made him more noticeable to the larger predators. After wringing out his hair and giving his head a healthy shake, he waded out of the water to start drying off. That's when he heard it.

Poppopopop.

Gunfire, distant, but gunfire. Narrowing his eyes, he growled softly before shifting. He' be able to cover much more ground as a raptor, and do more damage. Lightly, he scented the air, but wasn't able to pick anything up. The gunfire had come from downwind of him, anyway. Taking off at a lazy trot, he started towards the sound.

In typical fashion, the humans were making plenty of noise...Not only with their movement but from their bitching. Starting on their left, he circled behind them to their right, taking stock of how many there were and what they were armed with. Softly, he rumbled in amusement at the memory of the last group he had encountered because it made him realize how much he'd grown. He'd been able to look a man in the eyes, but now, he'd have to crane his neck to look down at them.

The man in the lead spat a curse at someone else and suddenly shoved through the undergrowth, away from the rest of the group. Idiot. Lunging forward with a snarl, he snapped his jaws down on the man's head and shook his own head violently until he hurt a wet snap. The man in his jaws went limp.

Someone else screamed and ran, this prompted him to drop the one in his jaws and bolt after the runner. Long ago, he would have relied more on stealth, but these people were already panicked. As he got closer to the runner, he pounced and made a disappointed huff at the strangled sound the human made. Well, it wasn't likely the man would be getting up anytime soon with how his upper chest was crushed.

Honestly, this was the most fun that he'd had in some time. A third person was completely running in the opposite direction, so naturally, he gave chase. This one, he snagged by the arm and shook his head again. However, the arm came off in a somewhat comical manner, leaving him holding the limb in his mouth and blinking a bit in surprise. Dropping it, he stalked after the human and paused before raising a foot and simply gutting him with a toe claw. The fourth had ran off, and likely wouldn't survive for too long.

This only left number five. It was hard to find him under the smell of all the blood, but once he had, he moved away. This was to make it seem as if he couldn't find him. Circling back around, he silently stalked up behind the man and then snorted hot air onto his neck before making the characteristic clicking noise that raptors were known for. However, unlike the Velociraptors who populated the island, his clicking was deeper and a great deal more menacing.

Of course, just for his own amusement, he leaned down a bit more and snorted in the human's ear. Then, he opened his mouth knowing the man likely could see his teeth. He remained like that for a moment before finally making a soft click and swiping his tongue over the side of the man's face.

Rowan wasn't surprised that things went to shit. In fact, he was surprised it had taken this long for something to attack them, although he suspected that the loud and unfamiliar sound of gunfire would have driven off many of the other dinosaurs. Except maybe some of the raptors or the T Rex that was supposedly wandering around here somewhere. Who knew what InGen had been cooking up before they'd destroyed things for themselves? He wouldn't put anything past the corporate types, not really. After all, look at the reason they'd come here... which was, funnily enough, the same reason that a chunk of his crew was now dead.

The creature that had attacked them seemed to have lost his scent, and probably knew as well as Rowan himself did that the fourth man was bound to run into trouble that he likely wouldn't survive. If he didn't team up with the others, and soon, he'd just be on his way to trouble, and lots of it. Rowan didn't particularly care, he had no attachment to that man or to any others, and so his only concern with the bodies was to pick them over for weapons or anything else of use or value. Assuming he survived, he could probably fence a good deal of it for a hefty chunk of change.

And then he heard a snort behind him, hot air gusting across the back of his sweaty neck. Every single alarm bell in his head started ringing at top volume, and Rowan could do nothing but freeze, anticipating a quick and violent end. There were the teeth, which honestly would have been fascinating if they weren't about to rip his face off, and then.... aw fuck no. Fuck no. What was that supposed to mean? Was this a taste test? A fear tactic? Nobody had been able to tell them just how big or smart this thing was, but clearly... Clearly they had left out a lot in the briefing. Rowan didn't move at all, hoping that that would just make the thing either lose interest in him or kill him off quickly to tidy up loose ends. Probably the best he could hope for.

When nothing happened, he tilted his head slightly to stare at the human with a bright green eye. The guy was clearly frozen with fear, the smell rolled off of him and was tangy with a hint of bitterness. Quite honestly, he was tempted to kill him...But on the other hand, he could be useful. There was a possibility of there being multiple teams who had landed, especially if they had been sent by InGen. Likely, the human would try to meet up with the others. With that in mind, he scraped the bottom of his jaw over the top of the man's head, effectively scent marking him.

The fourth member of the team screamed from a distance away, briefly attracting his attention. Given that it had been a scream of pain, the hunter was likely dead or was soon to be dead. Making a soft rumble, he stepped past the human in front of him. The past pictures of his raptor form had shown a juvenile, heavier set and slightly taller than the Velociraptors, but still somehow gangly. To top things off, his patterning had been a mottled brown with faint green striping. Now that he was an adult, he looked completely different. At six foot at the shoulder, he looked more like a Velociraptor's bigger, nastier, older brother: the Utahraptor. Still heavier bodied than a Velociraptor, he had sacrificed speed for endurance and raw power. Likely the most startling change was the patterning. He had kept the dark brown base coloration, but was covered in green striping which culminated in a vivid green blushing on his head.

He gave the human a final glance before ducking into the undergrowth. For now, he'd remain in the area to see if the little lamb would lead him to the rest of the herd..

For some reason, Rowan wasn't being eaten alive by a ridiculously tall, violent monster. He had no idea why, but he wasn't about to turn over and ask the raptor why he wasn't eviscerating him. Pretty stupid, wasn't it? Instead he froze, and then very nearly pissed himself when the raptor... rubbed on him? What the fucking fuck? What was that supposed to do? What was it for? There was absolutely no reason for him to do that.

Somewhere off in the distance, the other man gave a unholy howl, almost certainly signifying his death. Rowan couldn't say he was going to shed any tears for the man, all things considered. He'd been all right as far as teammates went, but he was nothing more than an ally. And allies weren't going to help him after he'd been killed. Which was almost certainly what was about to happen.

But to his surprise, the raptor moved away from him, moving off at an angle that let Rowan get a pretty good look at him. He was a lot bigger, and the colouring was different than he'd last seen. If he hadn't been worried that he was about to get hunted and murdered, he would have been pretty impressed. The dinosaur was pretty well built, not to mention the nearly neon green colouring on his head.

And the dinosaur disappeared. Rowan laid still for a while, expecting it to be some kind of trick. But nothing happened, and eventually, he shifted forward a few inches, checking out a better view of the kill site. Nothing came out and nobody moved, so he slowly stood up, pausing to see what happened next. Evidently the bloodbath had driven away everything but the bigger carnivores, which would probably be around sooner or later.

Rather than waiting for them to show up, he jogged off toward the main base camp, keeping his finger on the trigger. If he saw that thing again, he knew he was dead, but hopefully he could get in a few bullets first. Otherwise... well, at least he wouldn't die like a moron, unlike the first casualty.

He was a patient hunter, willing to wait for the perfect chance to strike. So, when the human didn't get up immediately, he simply lurked in the immediate area. All of the screaming, snarling, and other noises had spooked everything off...Not that it was really a surprise. Most things tended to scatter when he came around. Still, that wasn't too productive at the moment since he was starting to get hungry. No matter, he could find something while he tracked the human. Speaking of which, the guy had apparently decided to move.

For the moment, he kept him in sight, since the smell of all the blood was overpowering the human's scent. However, once they got past that, he veered away to make a quick meal of one of the many small critters running around the island. Once his hunger was satisfied, he moved back to the human's trail and followed. He was keeping a very healthy distance and relied on his keen sense of smell. It wouldn't do for the human to accidentally spot him.

Truthfully, he didn't know if there were other teams. There had always been in the past and he didn't think InGen would change things up so drastically...Especially with how dangerous and hostile the island could be. Still, he could always kill the guy later if it turned out that his team had been the only one.

Briefly, he paused and tilted his head as a T-rex roared in the distance. For the time being, it wasn't a threat, but he'd have to pay attention. While he considered the human his prey, he wouldn't hesitate to abandon the hunt should one of the Rexes come barreling in.
